Most septic contractors will not put a number on a web page, because the honest answer is that it depends on the soil. That is true, but it is not useful. The ranges below are typical figures for orientation, so you know roughly what you are facing before anyone visits. They are not quotes, and they are not offers: we are a referral service, not a contractor, and your real price comes in writing from the contractor after a site visit.
Every range here is modelled from typical market pricing for this kind of work, not from invoices for your area. Where the state sets a rule that drives the cost, such as tank size, we cite the rule.
Typical septic costs by job
| Job | Typical range (not a quote) | Main cost driver |
|---|---|---|
| Septic inspection | $300 – $650 | Whether pumping is included |
| Tank pumping | $350 – $650 | Tank size and access |
| Septic tank replacement | $1,800 – $4,800 | Tank size, material, access |
| Drain field replacement | $7,000 – $15,000 | Soil quality, available repair area |
| New conventional system | $6,000 – $11,000 | Soil evaluation results |
| New LPP or advanced system | $14,000 – $28,000 | Water table depth, lot constraints |
Typical ranges for orientation only, modelled; not quotes or offers.
The four things that move a septic price
- Soil and water table. The site evaluation decides whether a conventional gravity field works or an engineered system is required. This is the largest single driver.
- Bedroom count. North Carolina sizes systems by bedrooms. Under 15A NCAC 18E .0801 a home with four or fewer bedrooms needs at least a 1,000 gallon tank and a five-bedroom home at least 1,250 gallons.
- Access. Much of the cost of a tank or field job is excavation. A tank under a deck or behind mature landscaping costs more to reach.
- Repair area. If the area reserved on your original permit is still usable, a replacement field is straightforward. If it was built over, options narrow and costs rise.
Costs that are easy to forget
- County permit fees, set by each county's own schedule
- A private evaluator's fee if you use the Authorized On-site Wastewater Evaluator route instead of waiting for the county
- Yearly operation and maintenance for advanced treatment units, which some permits require under a contract with a certified operator
- Clearing, fill or landscaping repair after the work
Coastal lots versus inland lots
The same job can cost very different amounts in different parts of the region. Lots near the sound, tidal creeks and river marshes, in places like Hampstead, Porters Neck and Boiling Spring Lakes, are more likely to need low-pressure pipe or advanced treatment, which sit at the top of the ranges. Larger inland lots around Burgaw, Rocky Point and Winnabow more often support a conventional field at the bottom of the ranges.
For the permit steps that come before any of this, see the septic permit guide.
The Only Number That Counts Is the One for Your Lot

Get My Free Written EstimateCost questions homeowners ask
Why can't anyone give me a septic price over the phone?
Because the soil decides the system, and the system decides the price. Until the site has been evaluated, a contractor cannot know whether you need a conventional field or an engineered design, and the difference is often five figures.
Is a septic system cheaper in rural Pender or Brunswick County?
Often, because larger, drier lots more often support a conventional gravity system and a preserved repair area. Low, wet ground anywhere in the region pushes the cost up.
Does homeowners insurance pay for a failed drain field?
Generally not. Standard policies commonly exclude wear, deterioration and gradual failure, which covers most drain field problems. Check your own policy.
