Winnabow is an unincorporated community along US 17 and NC 133 in northern Brunswick County, between Leland and Boiling Spring Lakes and west of the Cape Fear River. It is mostly rural, with homes on larger lots and newer subdivisions filling in along the main roads. Outside the few developments with utility service, homes rely on septic, and many on private wells as well.
Permits come from Brunswick County Environmental Health, a short drive away in Bolivia. As elsewhere in the county, you can use the county's own evaluation or hire an Authorized On-site Wastewater Evaluator, a Licensed Soil Scientist or Soil Geologist who can evaluate the site and design the system under state law.
Larger lots work in Winnabow's favour. There is usually room for a conventional gravity field, a preserved repair area, and the required separation from a private well. Low ground near swamps and creeks is the exception, where a shallow water table can push the design toward an engineered system.
For homeowners with an existing system, the main risks are the usual rural ones: a field that was never pumped, a home that has added bedrooms or occupants since the permit, and trees grown up over the lines. Our drain field replacement page covers the warning signs.
For buyers of land, the key is to get the soil evaluation and an Improvement Permit before you close if you can. The septic permit guide explains what the permit confirms and how long it stays valid.

Who permits septic systems in Winnabow?
Brunswick County Environmental Health in Bolivia. Brunswick County also accepts evaluations and designs from an Authorized On-site Wastewater Evaluator hired by the owner.
Do I need a soil evaluation before buying land in Winnabow?
It is not legally required before purchase, but it is the best way to know what system the lot will support and what it will cost before you commit.
What does septic work typically cost in Winnabow?
Larger, drier lots often support a conventional gravity field, which keeps costs toward the lower end of the typical ranges on our cost guide. Low, wet ground needs engineered designs that cost more. These are orientation ranges, not quotes.
Can my well and septic field share a small corner of the lot?
No. State rules set minimum separation distances between wells and septic components, and the county checks them during the evaluation. Plan the well, house, system and repair area together.
